Brent has been active in the sport of running for over 45 years. He served on the RRCA Board of Directors from 1987 to 1990 as Treasurer and again from 2004 to 2008 as Eastern Region Director and as National President from 2009-2012. Twice, he was given a special Presidents Award for Service. In 2007 he interviewed all living RRCA presidents for the 50th Anniversary report. He was a founding member of the Frederick Steeplechasers Running Club while still in college in 1975. He was their club president from 2000-2003.
Brent is an RRCA Certified coach, and he holds USATF Level I & Level II coaching certifications, as well as advanced certifications from USTFCCCA. He launched the Hood College Cross Country and Track & Field programs. He was recognized as a Maryland AAU Track Outstanding Coach and as the Hood College Coach of the Year. Brent holds an MBA and served in various capacities for Members of the United States House of Representatives, where he worked for over 30 years.
He was selected to the Frederick County (Alvin Quinn) Athletic Hall of Fame, the Frederick Community College Athletic Hall of Fame, and the Hood College Athletic Hall of Fame.
He and his wife Mary Catherine reside in Frederick, Maryland. They have three grown children.
